Things you might not know

A city full of firsts

Longmont's history is more interesting than most Front Range cities — pioneer-era origins, a place in the space program and in retail history, and one of the only municipally owned gigabit internet networks in the country.

1871

Named for a 14er

"Longmont" combines Longs (for Longs Peak, the 14,259-foot mountain on the western horizon) with the French word mont. The city was founded that year as the Chicago-Colorado Colony — Chicago residents who pooled funds to build an agricultural co-op on the Front Range.

1871

Colorado's first library

Longmont was the site of Colorado's very first library, founded the same year the city was. Reading rooms came before paved streets — a quiet signal of what kind of town the founders were building.

1902

Birthplace of JCPenney

The very first store to bear the JCPenney name opened in Longmont — originally operating under the name "The Golden Rule." A century later, the original storefront is still part of downtown Longmont's history.

1931

Astronaut hometown

NASA astronaut Vance Brand was born in Longmont. He flew on the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and multiple Space Shuttle missions. The Longmont municipal airport, Vance Brand Airport, is named in his honor.

2001

Colorado's first New Urbanist community

Prospect New Town, on the southern edge of Longmont, was designed by renowned architects Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk. It was Colorado's first project built on New Urbanism principles — colorful homes, narrow walkable streets, alley garages.

2014

Gigabit city

Longmont is one of very few U.S. cities to own and operate its own municipal broadband. NextLight, the city-owned fiber-optic network, is consistently ranked one of the fastest internet services in the country — and is typically cheaper than the big corporate ISPs.

2021

Sovereign nation partnership

Longmont signed a historic Sister City agreement with the Northern Arapaho — the first such formal agreement between a U.S. city and a sovereign Native American nation. A meaningful, modern chapter to the city's much longer history on this land.

Today

Craft capital

Longmont is a powerhouse for local craft — home to Left Hand Brewing, Oskar Blues, 300 Suns Brewing, and a revitalized independent downtown commercial district full of locally owned restaurants, coffee, and shops.

Open-space city

Over 1,500 acres of parks, 2,500 acres of protected open space, and dozens of miles of off-road trail networks — including the St. Vrain Greenway through town, the loop around McIntosh Lake, and direct access to Rocky Mountain National Park 40 miles west.

Public schools — the SVVSD advantage

One district, citywide

Every Longmont neighborhood is served by the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) — a major draw for families. SVVSD earned an A- grade from Niche and is ranked the #5 Best School District in the Denver Area.

The biggest practical advantage: universal open enrollment. Families can apply to attend any school within the district regardless of which Longmont neighborhood you live in. That means your home-search isn't locked to one boundary — you can prioritize home over school catchment, or vice versa, and adjust later.
